Jojoba oil is the liquid produced from the seed of the jojoba plant, which is native to the Southwestern United States. Jojoba oil is wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are very similar to human sebum. It is non-toxic, non-comedogenic and non-allergenic with a non-greasy feeling in use.
Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts. It is solid at colder temperatures, and melts at 76 degrees F. In soap, coconut oil contributes to an abundant lather, large fluffy bubbles, and high cleansing ability.
What is Palm Oil?
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the reddish pulp of the fruit of oil palms. Palm kernel oil is the oil derived from the kernel or seed of that same plant. The oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) originates from West Africa where it grows in the wild, and later was developed into an agricultural crop.
Why is it important for soap?
Palm oil has become very popular with the shift to vegetable based oils for soap making compared to the traditional use of tallow and lard which are derived from animal fats. Palm oil is very high in Palmitic acid, which makes a bar of soap hard and long lasting with a stable lather, and it is also high in oleic acid, which helps to create a more conditioning lather.
What are other uses for palm oil?
Extra virgin olive oil (Olea europaea) is made by simply crushing olives and extracting their juice, it is the oil that is retained from the first pressing of the olive and is left in its natural unrefined state. The remainder of the olive material is further processed with industrial techniques to extract more oil from it. Extra virgin olive oil is the only olive oil that is made without the use of chemicals and industrial refining techniques. Its appearance is a greenish yellow color with a characteristic aroma. Organic extra virgin olive oil is commonly known to be the highest quality oil available. Olive oil is used in soap primarily for its exceptionally mild, slippery, and creamy lather. It makes a long lasting bar that produces tiny bubbles.
